Indigenous stone : Sheffield’s crown of Crosland Hill

Sheaf Square, in front of Sheffield Railway Station, links the Station with the city centre. Station Gateway contains seating, trees, lighting and two spectacular water features (part of one of which is pictured left) that include £350,000 worth of Crosland Hill York stone from Johnsons Wellfield Quarries.

Design and fix was by Vetter UK. The decision to use Crosland Hill stone was taken in light of the requirements for a material with a high technical specification that could be produced to the exacting production tolerances required to accommodate the fluid dynamics of the complex design.

To produce the stone for this outstanding work of art, Johnsons used two milling machines reading information from AutoCAD alongside a complement of profilers.
