Is there anybody out there?

The Scottish Stone Liaison Group (SSLG) has written to all 32 local authorities in Scotland to ask them what provisions they are making to satisfy the requirement in NPPG 18 to identify appropriate sources of traditional building materials in order to maintain the character of their built environments.

After two months only six authorities had replied - and two of those did not address the question - so another letter was sent in October and a third is planned. After that the SSLG will report back to the Scottish Parliament.

"The concern is," says Alan McKinney, chief executive of the SSLG, "that the needs of the Government in respect to this issue could be frustrated by the lack of understanding and action at local government level."
