West Dean College of Arts & Conservation is looking for an artist-maker to be its Maker-in-Residence for 2021.
Artists with any skills will be considered, including stone working, carving and lettercutting.
The residency takes place between Monday, March 8 and Friday March 19, 2021. Applications have to be submitted between Thursday, October 29 and Sunday, November 29 this year.
The Makers Residency was inaugurated last year. Linda Brothwell was the first year's Maker-in-Residence and this year's was sculptor Alec Stevens.
Linda Brothwell is best known for initiating a 'repair' movement in the arts, in which she 'repairs' familiar objects to highlight their power to evoke memories and emotions in people. She was awarded the Jerwood Makers Open in 2013 for her first edition of the Acts of Care series, 'The Sheffield Edition', and shortlisted for Design of the Year for her ‘Bench Repair Project’ at the Lisbon Experimenta Biennale in 2009.
After Alec Stevens' two week residency working alongside students in the College’s Fine Art and Furniture workshops he created a new body of work that referenced the College’s Collection & Archive. He said: “West Dean’s combination of excellent facilities, perfect staffing and a heritage that is ripe for exploring, ensured I was actively encouraged to make, think and be ambitious.”
West Dean College is held in exceptionally high regard as a centre of learning in arts and conservation of buildings. If you are not familiar with it, it is well worth finding out more about. You can start on its website at westdean.org.uk.
The residency programme provides artist-makers with full board accommodation for the two-weeks of their residency. Studio space is provided, as well as access to a variety of resources and facilities, including the College Library, technical support, the Historic House, and the West Dean Archive & Collection.
A stipend of £500 is offered, which has to cover any materials needed.
To apply, you have to send a proposal outlining how you would like to spend your fortnight as Maker-in-Residence, what facilities you would require, and an indication of any additional support you might need.

Applications are particularly encouraged from makers whose interests align with the College’s ethos and history and the subjects with which it is involved: Architecture, Archives & Collections, Conservation, Dance, Design, Education, Horticulture, Music, Patronage, Publishing, Surrealism, Theatre, and Writing.
