The World Monument Fund\'s newly published two-yearly list of the world\'s 100 most endangered historic sites includes the West Bank of the Nile and the whole of Iraq. It also includes the Minster Church of St Mary\'s in Stow, Lincolnshire, endangered for the want of £1.5million worth of repairs.

It is the only English site listed, although there is also a Scottish Church, Saint Vincent\'s Street Church in Glasgow.

St Mary\'s is one of the largest surviving Saxon churches in Britain, dating back to the 10th Century, and it is listed Grade I.

The reason it has been included on the list of the New York based organisation that helps raise money and awareness of endangered built heritage is as a symbol of neglect of religious buildings as culture changes.

World Monuments Fund president Bonnie Burnham says: "The biennial Watch list tells us not only which sites are in peril, but also what kinds of threats are endangering the world\'s heritage."
