Welsh slate for Plymouth
The latest in the series of renovated buildings to be re-roofed at the Royal William Yard, Plymouth, has been covered with 29,000 natural Cwt-y-Bugail Welsh slates supplied by Alfred McAlpine Slate to main contractors Stansell for laying by GK Roofing Specialists.
The Royal William Yard is a former naval victualling centre designed in the 1830s by Sir John Rennie. There are 10, Grade I listed buildings on 19 acres providing 47,000m2 of covered space currently being redeveloped under the auspices of the South West of England Regional Development Agency.
The use of the Cwt-y-Bugail dark blue grey roofing slates preserved the historical heritage of the site while at the same time guaranteeing long-term, low maintenance weatherproofing.
The building roofed in this contract is known as The New Cooperage. The rest of the buildings will also be re-roofed in due course using the same slate.
