Work underway to open new Portland limestone mine
This is Stonehills on Portland, where a new mine is being opened for the extraction of the famous Portland limestone so extensively used for newbuild and conservation work in London (in particular), although it is also used in other parts of the UK and abroad. Albion Stone, which expects to start removing block from the mine in the New Year, after which its entire stone production will be from mines rather than opencast quarries, wants to export more of its stone and was exhibiting again at the Marmomacc stone exhibition in Verona, Italy, in September. See the NSS report from Marmomacc.
