The Government's deadline for the implementation of Level 2 BIM is April. If you still do not know what it is all about, BSRIA has a training course for beginners on 12 May. It is not cheap, but if you need to know more about BIM you can find out more about the course and book it here.
There is also a useful article by Ben Roberts, Associate and BIM Delivery Leader of Hoare Lee, on the BSRIA website explaining why you might want to learn about BIM.
If the very mention of BIM (it stands for building information modelling, in case you did not know) sends you to sleep or into confusion, you are not alone. It is why, according to Ben Roberts, there will be no BIM 3. It is not that BIM, with its 3D modelling, is disappearing. Rather, it is being 'refreshed' - which means it is getting a name change. After BIM 2 it will become 'digital built Britain', which will no doubt be known as DBB.
Ben Roberts thinks it is a good to remove the BIM acronym that comes with too much baggage and stigma and get down to what it really means, which, according to him, is "sensible data management, better quality communication of design intent, easier and more effective collaboration, and many opportunities to do things more quickly and accurately".
He says: "When thinking about 'digital' rather than 'BIM', we find ourselves asking a more straight forward question: what can computers and data do for us?"
You can discover his answer by clicking on the link above. To put it crudely, he thinks it lets computers take over the boring stuff while people get on with the fun stuff. "So," says Ben, "I encourage you all, upon hearing the acronym 'BIM', not to run for the hills but to simply consider what computers and data can do to help you."
