Liam O’Connor, the architect of the Portland limestone Armed Forces Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, has been appointed to design the long awaited Bomber Command Memorial to be erected in the City of Westminster, London.

The memorial will commemorate the bomber aircrews who flew in World War Two. Nearly half of the force of 125,000 died on their missions.

Liam O’Connor worked with stone company S McConnell & Sons in Kilkeel, Northern Ireland, to create the Armed Forces Memorial. McConnell inscribed on it the names of the 15,500 soldiers who have died on active service since the end of World War Two. He won the Bomber Command Memorial commission against competition from Norman Foster & Partners and Donald Insall Associates, who were also shortlisted.
