A memorial was unveiled last month in the street in Bradford where West Yorkshire PC Sharon Beshenivsky was gunned down by armed robbers when she and a colleague responded to a panic alarm. The Mayor of Bradford, Chief Constable Sir Norman Bettison, and many of PC Beshenivsky’s colleagues attended the ceremony.

The metre-high Balmoral granite memorial (pictured right) was made by Town & Country Memorial in Waterlooville, Portsmouth. It was just the latest stone commissioned from them by the Police Memorial Trust to commemorate police officers who have died in the course of their duty. The stones are erected where the offices die.

At last month’s unveiling, Sir Norman Bettison said: “This permanent memorial is an appropriate way of marking the terrible events that took place here on 18 November 2005, a day which will be remembered as one of West Yorkshire Police’s darkest.”
