Chris Daniels has gained the Marsh Award for Public Sculpture for the restoration of the Grade I listed Coade Stone monument to George III on the Esplanade at Weymouth. The project was featured in Natural Stone Specialist last year.
The Award is presented annually by the Public Monuments and Sculpture Association (PMSA) and the Marsh Christian Trust and took place at the Whitechapel Gallery, London, with Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, as guest of honor in November.
The Marsh Award was founded in 1991 to raise awareness of art in public places. The George III restoration was one of four projects honoured this year. The other three were all new works in concrete and perspex.
The Award to the George III statue recognises the continuing role of the sculpture in te seaside town 200 years after its erection. The award was presented to Chris Daniels of Osirion Building Conservation.
