Stonemasonry student Kyle Makowski at Building Crafts College in London has been presened with the Sir Banister Fletcher Award as the College’s Student of the Year.
All the college’s senior teaching staff from all trades are involved in the selection process and agreed Kyle had made an outstanding contribution not just in his studies, but to the College community as a whole.
Kyle, who now works for Wells Cathedral Stonemasons, was also awarded the Worshipful Company of Masons’ Prize for the best Diploma Student.
Other masonry students honoured in the BCC’s end of year prize-giving are Rob Rees, who works for Rominar UK. He received the Worshipful Company of Masons’ Prize for outstanding effort. Jake Wood, an apprentice with Canterbury Cathedral, won the WCM Prize for outstanding practical skills.
Graeme Stewart won the John Gallacher Award for the most improved student. This was being presented for the first time since being bequeathed to the college by the former Building Manager whose name it commemorates.
The Avery Knight Trophy for Best Performing 1st Year Stonemasonry Student, sponsored by the Bath hand tool company it is named after, went to Chris Wyman.
The awards were presented by Major General Evelyn Webb-Carter,KCVO,OBE,DL, the President of the London Youth Trust, which is working with the Worshipful Company of Carpenters, which founded the BCC in 1893, helping to fund training across London.
